I Made Mahendra Mangku was born on 3 December 1972 in Sukawati village in Gianyar, Bali. He received his bachelor degree of Fine Arts from the Indonesia Art Institute in Yogyakarta in year 1997. Mangku received award for Best Sketch and Painting in year 1992 from the Institute, and Best Painting in year 1997 in the Institute Anniversary Exhibition. He participated in various exhibitions of the artists group called Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in Java and Bali. Mangku had also taken part in the ‘Eleven Young Artist’, which is an artists group. He also joined the Affandi Prize Competition, Legends of 92 and Philip Morris Indonesia Competition in year 1996 and 1997
